Tree Plantation Initiative with Intercropping and Seed Balls in Paschim Champaran
In a bold stride toward climate resilience and biodiversity enhancement, West Champaran district today launched a comprehensive tree plantation program under the VB-GRAM-G scheme. The district administration has set an ambitious target of planting one million saplings, signalling a long-term commitment to expanding green cover and promoting sustainable land use.
The district aims to plant 1 million saplings across blocks, with a clear timeline and monitoring framework to track progress. Alongside standard plantation efforts, the plan includes intercrops between planted trees to introduce diverse species and create more resilient agro-ecological systems and to accelerate reach, the program is producing 50,000 seed balls per block. Beneficiaries and school students are actively involved in the preparation and placement of seed balls at suitable sites, expanding community participation and ownership.
From seed to sapling initiative, to promote intercropping and biodiversity, Sharifa (custard apple) seeds and polybags were provided to the “Didī ki Nursery” last year. This leg of the initiative has borne fruit, with seeds germinating into ready-to-plant saplings. In a continuation of this effort, today’s program began distributing these Sharifa plants to vanposhaks for planting. The plan envisions planting these saplings between existing larger trees, leveraging partial shade tolerance to support growth.
Rationale and expected benefits
Biodiversity enrichment: Intercropping and the introduction of diverse species are expected to strengthen the district’s ecological balance, support pollinators, and create microhabitats for birds and small wildlife.
Sparrow conservation and livelihoods: Sharifa trees, favored by sparrows, are anticipated to contribute to sparrow conservation while providing an additional income stream for forest nutrients involved in the program.
Community engagement: By involving beneficiaries and school children in seed ball production and planting, the initiative fosters environmental stewardship at the grassroots level.
Today’s highlights
The launch event took place at a school in the Amwa Majhar panchayat, Majhulia block. Local students received detailed information about tree planting and environmental benefits, helping to cultivate early environmental awareness. The Commissioner of the Tirhut commissionary started the plantation drive and delivered remarks on environmental stewardship, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
The District Magistrate of West Champaran, along with the team, reaffirmed a shared commitment to achieving the district’s targets, underscoring the seriousness of the initiative. The Deputy Development commissioner provided in-depth information about seed ball production and intercropping strategies, highlighting practical steps for scale and sustainability.
The integration of tree planting with seed ball technology and innovative intercropping holds promise for expanding the district’s green cover and enhancing ecological resilience.
